Before the Great Depression, Berkey & Gay was a premier furniture manufacturer known for high-end, ornate pieces. They were at their peak in the 1920s. The Depression caused demand for their high-end furniture to collapse. The years following the Depression up until their closure in the 1940s were full of struggles.

The Berkey & Gay Furniture Company is on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses urban lofts and offices rather than furniture.
